Position Summary
The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Idaho invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Eco-Immunology. We seek an innovative scientist who investigates immune function in wild or free-ranging animals and uses these systems to address fundamental questions at the interface of immunology, ecology, evolution, and infectious disease. We are broadly interested in candidates whose research examines how immune responses vary among individuals, populations, species, or environments, and how this variation influences infection, disease, fitness, host–pathogen interactions, or population and community processes.
Research approaches may span scales from molecular and cellular mechanisms to whole-organism, population, and evolutionary processes. We particularly welcome candidates who combine field studies of natural populations with experimental, molecular, genomic, serological, cellular, or computational approaches.
Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
- ecological and evolutionary immunology
- immune function in wild animal populations
- environmental influences on immunity and disease susceptibility
- comparative and evolutionary immunology
- immunological variation within and among natural populations
- wildlife disease ecology and emerging infectious disease
The successful candidate will establish an externally funded, internationally recognized research program; mentor undergraduate and graduate students; contribute to the intellectual life of the Department of Biological Sciences; and participate in interdisciplinary collaborations across the University of Idaho. The position offers opportunities to interact with faculty working in ecology and evolution, infectious disease, immunology, genomics, computational biology, mathematical biology, and host–pathogen interactions.
The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate education in Biological Sciences. Depending on expertise and departmental needs, teaching may include courses in areas such as immunology, organismal biology, ecology, infectious disease, or related subjects, as well as development of advanced courses in the candidate’s area of specialization. The successful candidate will also mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers. Duties include teaching an average of 1.5 classes per academic year;
maintaining an active research program that includes securing external funding to support research activities in area of expertise; mentoring undergraduate and graduate students; attending faculty meetings and departmental seminars; serving on department, college, and/or university committees.
Minimum Education/Degree Required Listed degree qualification is required at time of application.
Required Qualifications
- An earned doctorate in a field relevant to Ecological Immunology.
- A minimum of 2 years of post-doctoral research experience relevant to the proposed research program.
- An active research program or research expertise in the field of ecological immunology.
- Peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals.
Preferred Qualifications
- A demonstrated potential to secure external research funding (e.g., grants, fellowships).
- Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate student researchers.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
