SUMMARY:

Individuals of this class shall participate in classroom and practical training in the performance of a variety of technical tasks such as but not limited to: support of fire prevention and suppression, medical emergency and hazardous materials handling functions; to learn the operation and maintenance of assorted fire and rescue apparatus and equipment; and to participate in fire prevention and station and equipment maintenance activities.

This is the entry level/recruit classification. This class is distinguished from an experienced certified firefighter by the primary assignment to training activities and by the performance of the most routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within this classification. Employees in this classification typically work under immediate supervision and are trained such that they meet the State of Mississippi Minimum Standards for firefighters.

Individuals of this category may have limited or no directly related work experience under this training class.

• ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  Rules and Regulations Fire Department Apparatus SCBA Hose Lays Fire Chemistry Fire streams and sprinklers Ladder Raises Fire Service Hydraulics Emergency Medical Care Rescue & Protective Breathing Community Engagement Hazardous Materials Ventilation Salvage & Overhaul Fire Behavior Forcible Entry Portable Fire Extinguisher Fire Inspections Rope Slides, Knot Tying Fire Prevention Safety Physical Training Basic Tools & Their Use Fire Prevention Water Rescue Fire Alarms Communication
• Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and test apparatus and equipment. Ensure that appropriate conditions are maintained at the assigned station; ensure that all equipment and apparatus are in a constant state of readiness for emergency calls.
• Study street and apartment locations in assigned areas; study building plans and fire prevention systems in buildings in assigned areas; study pre-emergency plans.
• Prepare clear and concise reports.
• Apply, learn and interpret Federal, State and local policies, procedures, and laws and regulations.
• Work irregular hours including weekends, holidays and extended hours in an emergency, disaster and/or other situations influenced by workload or staffing difficulties.
• Assists with tours of assigned fire station, demonstrate fire equipment and apparatus, and participate in other educational programs for various groups and public.
• Performs other duties as determined by the Shift Lieutenant or Battalion Chief.

• Ability to perform the basic functions, services and activities of a comprehensive fire and rescue program; basic office procedures, methods and equipment; safe work practices and procedures.
• Must communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to learn various methods and tasks in areas of firefighting, fire prevention, and related activities.
• Able to engage in moderate to strenuous physical activity and work long hours during emergency situations.
• Able to read and interpret a variety of maps, plans, and diagrams.
• Able to perform detailed reports and record maintenance duties.
• Ability to learn a variety of methods of communication. (i.e. radio, phone system, fire apps, email etc.)
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, co-workers, and public officials.
• Knowledge of English, spelling, and math.
• Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations; to determine proper course of action in various dangerous situations and use sound judgment in managing them.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers and the public.
• Ability and physical strength to do prolonged and arduous work.
• Ability to climb ladders and work at considerable heights.
• Overall physical health: good reflexes, vision, and hearing; ability to maneuver through obstacles, while carrying loads of equipment and rescuing people; manual dexterity to operate communications devices and other equipment while wearing safety gear and navigating in low visibility; climbing and/or repelling.
• Ability to react to change productively and to oversee other tasks as assigned.
• Must maintain a valid Mississippi vehicle operator’s license.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position has no supervisory duties.
