Overview

The Special Education Teacher provides instructional support for students with special education needs in accordance with district and state guidelines. The position reports to the Building Principal and the Director of Special Services and may supervise instructional staff as assigned by the principal.

• Proper certification by the State Department of Education, with endorsement in field/subject of state special education endorsements

• INSTRUCTION AND ASSESSMENT – Deliver the instructional program in an organized and effective manner by:
• Providing quality work that engages students in learning
• Knowing how to teach the subject(s) to students
• Recognizing and responding to individual differences in students
• Differentiating instruction for a variety of developmental stages and ability levels
• Implementing adopted curriculum subject matter standards and assessment instruments to meet school and district goals
• Planning lessons in a logical sequence
• Demonstrating knowledge of the subjects to be taught and their relationships to other subjects
• Reflecting on teaching and devising ways to improve performance
• Collaborating with other educators to support a complete educational environment
• Using a variety of assessment techniques to evaluate student performance and applying results to improve instruction
• Assuming responsibility for all students to ensure progress toward annual goals as determined by local, state and federal standards
• Participating in the referral-to-placement process for students referred for Child Study
• Utilizing technology in the teaching and learning process

• CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT – Exhibit effective classroom management skills by:
• Providing a physical environment that is safe, orderly, hazard-free and conducive to learning
• Consistently implementing approved disciplinary measures to support effective instruction

• COMMUNICATION – Exhibit effective communication skills by:
• Relating to parents and community members in a positive and helpful manner
• Writing, speaking, and presenting clearly, concisely, and in a well-planned manner

• PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT – Exhibit professional growth by:
• Participating in self-initiated and district/school-initiated professional growth to maintain licensure and support school improvement efforts

• POLICIES AND PROCEDURES – Comply with district and school policies by:
• Adhering to policies and procedures established by district, state and federal guidelines
• Submitting required paperwork efficiently and accurately by deadlines
• Inventorying classroom materials, textbooks and equipment

• OTHER DUTIES – Carry out other assigned duties by:
• Assuming co-curricular and extra-curricular duties as assigned
• Participating in departmental/grade level teams and district committees as requested
• Attending school-related functions outside the instructional day
• Performing other duties as assigned by administrator

Salary commensurate with year of experience, in accordance with Moss Point School District policies and pay scale.

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the district’s policy on personnel evaluation.
