The Registered Occupational Therapist’s job is to provide rehabilitation therapy to patients of all ages with temporary or chronic physical and mental disabilities. This is achieved through purposeful activity that includes manual and creative skills, educational and recreational activities, facilitation techniques, developmental skills, and other techniques tailored to the needs of acutely and chronically ill patients. Treatment aims to improve physical function and promote mental adjustment.
PrimaryFunction
Provide occupational therapy, assessing physical and functional status and planning therapy programs for individuals, out‑patients, extended‑care center patients and groups, and stress‑management patients. Evaluate, record, and report progress for the rehabilitation team. Prepare and fit splints, requisition supplies and equipment, maintain a safe department, and use equipment economically. Perform related duties as assigned.
Performance Requirements- Direct patient treatments.
- Ensure patient safety while in the Occupational Therapy Department.
- Maintain organization and proper order of the treatment area.
- Maintain departmental and patient records.
- Monitor supplies used for extended care, physical disabilities, and stress‑management patients.
- Chart daily progress of patients.
Bending, stooping, lifting patients and equipment when necessary; pushing patients in wheelchairs and on stretchers; adjusting equipment to meet specific needs; giving resistive exercise; physical contact with patients is sometimes necessary.
Special DemandsDesire to work with people with temporary or chronic mental, physical, or developmental disabilities; knowledge of medical terminology; experience in arts and crafts for patient strength and function; common sense and reasoning; firm kindness when dealing with patients; confidentiality of personal information; versatility in dealing with diverse patients and treatment programs.
Qualifications EducationThe Registered Occupational Therapist has satisfactorily completed an Occupational Therapy curriculum approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association and is licensed or eligible for licensure by the Alabama Board of Occupational Therapy and certified by the American Board of Certification.
ExperienceNo previous experience is required, but desirable if educational requirements are met.
AuthorityThe Registered Occupational Therapist delivers treatment only on written or verbal procedures as prescribed by a medical doctor or D.O.

- Utilize hospital equipment efficiently.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
