Job Overview

The Hydrogen Production Engineer will lead the design, optimization, and operation of hydrogen electrolyzer systems at Sasol’s Mossel Bay facility. This position involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective hydrogen generation that meets both internal demand and external market requirements. The role is pivotal in scaling up green hydrogen production, integrating renewable electricity sources, and supporting Sasol’s broader sustainability initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, commission, and optimize large-scale water electrolysis plants for green hydrogen production.
  • Develop and implement process control strategies to maximize efficiency and minimize energy consumption.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and civil engineers to integrate renewable power sources such as solar and wind.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, techno-economic analyses, and risk assessments for new hydrogen projects.
  • Monitor plant performance, troubleshoot operational issues, and lead root-cause investigations.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Prepare technical documentation, reports, and presentations for senior management and external stakeholders.
  • Support the development of patents and intellectual property related to hydrogen technologies.
Required Skills
  • Strong knowledge of electrochemical processes, water electrolysis, and hydrogen handling.
  • Proficiency in process simulation tools (e.g., Aspen HYSYS, COMSOL).
  • Experience with renewable energy integration and grid interaction.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and data-driven decision making.
  • Effective communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
  • Project management experience, including budgeting and scheduling.
  • Commitment to safety, sustainability, and continuous improvement.
Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required. A Master’s degree or professional certifications in renewable energy or hydrogen technologies are highly desirable and will be considered an advantage during the selection process.

Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of five years of hands-on experience in hydrogen production, electrolyzer technology, or related chemical process engineering. Experience with in the energy sector, especially in renewable projects, will be given priority. Demonstrated experience in leading multidisciplinary teams and delivering large-scale projects on time and within budget is essential.
