About the Role Our client is seeking an accomplished Lead Scientist to direct their materials science research and development efforts in Mossel Bay . This senior position requires a visionary leader to guide innovation in novel material development, characterization, and application. You will be responsible for setting the research agenda, managing a team of scientists and engineers, and ensuring the successful transition of new materials from concept to production.

This is a critical role for an experienced scientist passionate about pushing the boundaries of material science in a dedicated R&D facility located in the scenic Western Cape .

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the research and development of novel materials, focusing on areas such as polymers, composites, or advanced ceramics.
  • Manage and mentor a team of materials scientists and technicians, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.
  • Oversee the design and execution of experiments for material synthesis, processing, and characterization.
  • Utilize advanced analytical techniques (e.g., SEM, TEM, XRD, DSC) to understand material properties and performance.
  • Develop strategic research roadmaps aligned with business objectives and market needs.
  • Write technical reports, patents, and publications to disseminate research findings.
Requirements
  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in materials research and development, with a strong publication or patent record.
  • Proven experience in leading research teams and managing R&D projects.
  • Expertise in one or more areas of materials science, such as polymer chemistry, nanotechnology, or additive manufacturing.
  • Proficiency in various characterization techniques relevant to materials science.
  • Excellent leadership, strategic thinking, and communication skills.
