Senior Highways Engineer

Role Overview

We are looking for skilled highways professionals to join our Amey Consulting team across Staffordshire, the Midlands (including North Wales), Scotland and Newcastle. The role involves delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions that enhance lives and protect our shared future, working on a hybrid basis from one of our office locations.

The position offers the opportunity to develop technical expertise, take ownership of project delivery, and lead multidisciplinary teams on major infrastructure programmes.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver highways engineering solutions across a variety of infrastructure projects.
  • Produce designs, drawings, calculations and technical documentation.
  • Support the successful delivery of projects while supervising and developing junior team members.
  • Work closely with clients and project stakeholders to deliver high‑quality outcomes.
  • Lead highways projects and provide technical guidance across project teams.
  • Manage project delivery, quality, budgets and programme requirements.
  • Mentor and develop engineers and technicians.
  • Support business growth through bid preparation and client engagement.
  • Provide technical and people leadership across major highways and infrastructure programmes.
  • Oversee engineering excellence, project performance and commercial success.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams and act as a trusted adviser to clients and stakeholders.
  • Drive innovation, work‑winning activities and the professional development of teams.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Highways and civil engineering design experience across local roads, major roads, junction improvements and transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Experience producing, reviewing and delivering designs, calculations, drawings and technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of Manual for Streets, DMRB, national standards and highways design best practice.
  • Understanding of highway design, S278 schemes, road safety and project delivery requirements.
  • Ability to deliver technically sound engineering solutions that meet client, programme, cost and quality requirements.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary teams and managing stakeholder relationships.
  • Strong awareness of health, safety, welfare and CDM requirements within infrastructure projects.
  • Commercial awareness and an understanding of delivering projects successfully within budget and programme constraints.
  • Experience mentoring, supervising or leading engineers and technicians.
  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Incorporated Engineer (IEng), Chartered Engineer (CEng) or actively working towards professional accreditation.
