Experts at what we do, we work in a professional way towards our shared goals, knowing the work we do makes a genuine, lasting difference on the environment. As Specialist in Industry Regulation, that involves:

  • Undertake the regulation of Scotland’s most complex and high-impact industrial sectors. These include energy from waste (incineration/ gasification/pyrolysis), production of primary aluminium, whisky production and storage, pharmaceutical manufacturing, chemical manufacturing and bulk storage, and carbon capture technology (including major new developments).
  • Undertake determination of applications for authorisation under the Environmental Authorisation (Scotland) Regulations (EASR), regulation of sites under the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations (COMAH), BREF (best available techniques reference document) reviews, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, and supporting SEPA’s priorities in relation to net zero
  • Provide expert technical advice and guidance for a broad range of industrial activities. This includes the ability to assess, understand and utilise technical information and data in a regulatory context
  • Contribute to SEPA policy and procedures, as required
  • Supervise and mentor colleagues, providing guidance support and training when required
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders
Respect for your expertise

This is a highly important role within our Regulation, Business & Environment portfolio, which means you’ll need:

  • Relevant experience or qualification equivalent to SCQF Level 10 (e.g. relevant Degree)
  • A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of environmental legislation applicable to the regulation of industrial sectors
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong interpersonal, consultative and negotiating skills
  • Well-developed planning, analytical and organisational skills
  • Proven regulatory and/or industry experience
