The Materials Planner/Buyer is responsible for ensuring the timely and cost-effective procurement of materials, components, and services required to support production and operational activities. The role combines material planning, inventory management, supplier relationship management, and purchasing activities to ensure uninterrupted production while maintaining optimal inventory levels.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and maintain material requirements plans (MRP) to support production schedules and customer demand.
- Monitor inventory levels and forecast future material requirements.
- Ensure material availability to meet production targets while minimising excess stock.
- Review and action MRP recommendations, including purchase requisitions and planned orders.
- Collaborate closely with Production, Engineering, Stores, and Sales teams to align material availability with operational requirements.
- Source and procure materials, components, and services from approved suppliers.
- Raise purchase orders and manage the end-to-end purchasing process.
- Negotiate pricing, delivery schedules, and commercial terms to achieve best value and support supplier selection, onboarding, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Monitor supplier performance relating to quality, cost, and delivery.
- Resolve supplier issues and expedite critical deliveries when required.
- Participate in stock counts and inventory accuracy improvement activities.
- Monitor stock levels, safety stocks, and reorder points.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with suppliers whilst working collaboratively to improve lead times, quality, and service levels.
- Support supply chain risk management activities and contingency planning.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and quality standards.
- Previous experience in a Materials Planning, Purchasing, Buyer, or Supply Chain role within a manufacturing environment.
- Experience managing supplier relationships and purchase orders.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload effectively.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
- Experience with in automotive, vehicle body manufacturing, engineering, or related industries.
CIPS qualification or working towards CIPS certification.
