The Transportation Worker 2 Equipment Operator reports to the Hancock County Maintenance Headquarters. Under general supervision, the operator performs full‑performance level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways. Duties include operating a range of motorized highway maintenance equipment—skid steers, utility tractors, aerial bucket trucks, front‑end loaders, tandem‑axle trucks, and snowplows—making major repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures, and performing minor mechanical repairs such as changing tires, blades, or filters.

The operator is responsible for equipment maintenance, including cleaning, lubricating, and checking fluid levels, as well as flagging, erecting traffic control signs and barricades on projects, shoveling materials, cleaning culverts, mowing, and brush cutting. Hazardous working conditions and inclement weather may be present. Other related duties may be assigned as required.

The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship is dependent on hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, and maintaining or obtaining a class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
  • Drive dump, flatbed, or tandem‑axle trucks.
  • Operate power vegetation equipment and attachments.
  • Operate highway maintenance equipment and attachments.
  • Operate heavy vehicles/GVWR 26,001 or greater.
  • Clean and lubricate equipment and check fluid levels.
  • Make minor mechanical repairs in the field such as changing tires, blades, or filters.
  • Repair and construct various culvert types.
  • Patch cement, pavement, and bridge decks.
  • Seal joints and cracks in paved surfaces.
  • Clean equipment and workshop.
  • Some positions in the Transportation Worker classifications may require certification(s) in the area of assignment after employment.
  • Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
  • In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods practiced in the building maintenance trades.
  • Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used.
  • Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to climb high steel structures.
  • Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
  • Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders).
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi‑skilled workers.

REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION
:
No formal education required.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE – Equipment Operator: A valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required. No substitutions for Equipment Operator CDL requirement.
