General Statement of DutiesPerforms skilled work in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment; performs related duties as required.
Distinguishing Features of the ClassEmployees in this position are responsible for the care of the City’s automotive fleet. The Automotive Mechanic must assure that vehicles are in proper working order and that maintenance is scheduled and performed routinely. This employee maintains an inventory of equipment and parts in order to perform maintenance and repair tasks. This employee makes determinations as to the safety of vehicles and when they are no longer viable for use.
The work is performed under the supervision of the Deputy Public Works Director of Streets and Solid Waste and is reviewed for results obtained and consistency with standard practices. This position manages and evaluates performance of two garage staff.
- Performs scheduled preventive maintenance service on vehicles and equipment.
- Greases and changes oil and other fluids in equipment and repairs and replaces tires.
- Performs mechanical repairs as directed.
- Maintains inventory of necessary tools, parts, and materials to complete tasks.
- Makes requisitions and purchases.
- Maintains shop area clean and keeps shop clear of discarded materials.
- Repairs and overhauls equipment and washes motor equipment and vehicles.
- Performs motor repairs and replacement work.
- Installs rings and bearings and effects proper adjustments.
- Performs engine tune‑ups, repairs electrical and hydraulic failures.
- Repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition and fuel systems.
- Makes road calls and makes repairs when required.
This position involves very heavy work requiring the employee to exert over 100 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to visually inspect and assemble small parts, operate machinery, and perform mechanical repairs.
An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions; subject to hazards including exposure to working mechanical parts, electrical currents, and exposure to chemicals; and subject to extreme heat and cold, noise, oils, fumes and vibrations. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens.
Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of passenger cars, trucks, construction and maintenance equipment.
- Knowledge of automotive electrical systems and methods of repairing them.
- General knowledge and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery.
- Ability to diagnose the more defects in the drive trains, chassis and other components of automotive equipment.
- Ability to adapt available tools and repairs parts to specific repair problems.
- Ability to interpret work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions in both oral and written form.
- Ability to maintain inventory of parts and materials.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Graduated from an accredited school with an Associate’s Degree and considerable experience in repairing automotive and power driven equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Additional RequirementMust possess a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License; and have certifications in air conditioning and brakes.
