Nuclear Physics Postdoctoral Research Fellow
The Department of Physics at Central Michigan University is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Experimental Nuclear Physics, with a start date of January 6, 2026
. The position will focus on precision mass measurements at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) and may involve instrumentation development and mentoring graduate students.
As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow you will:
- Plan and run experiments at FRIB, including time‑of‑flight mass measurements with the S800 spectrometer and Penning trap measurements with LEBIT.
- Develop and characterize radiation and ion beam tracking detectors and precision mass measurement instrumentation.
- Supervise CMU graduate students and develop your own experimental proposals.
- Collaborate with Drs. Alfredo Estrade and Matthew Redshaw on research projects related to nuclear astrophysics, structure and fundamental symmetries.
- Ph.D. in nuclear physics or a related field completed within the last 6 years (ABD candidates accepted if degree conferred by appointment start date).
- Demonstrated experience with nuclear physics techniques and data analysis.
- Strong scientific writing and communication skills.
- Strong interest in advancing knowledge in nuclear physics and astrophysics.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Experience with ion beam optics and simulations of ion beam transport.
- Experience with ion beam tracking detectors.
- Experience with ion trapping techniques.
- Experience preparing and running experiments at nuclear physics laboratories.
