Overview
Medical Lab Technician – Mt Pleasant Emergency Care Center. The role involves performing clinical testing in assigned sections (general laboratory, Blood Bank, Microbiology) with duties for accurate and timely results, including quality control, performance improvement, proficiency testing, and preventative maintenance. Recognizes abnormal/critical values and notifies medical team as required. Performs clerical, general, and phlebotomy duties related to daily laboratory operations and provides/dispenses blood products as requested by medical staff.

- Specimen Collection/Handling/Processing – obtains blood specimens via venipuncture/fingerstick, accurately identifies and labels, answers pneumatic tube system, follows procedures for processing and testing specimens, operates various centrifuges, and obtains other designated patient specimens as listed in procedure manuals.
- Result Reporting – recognizes errors or improbable results and takes appropriate action; reports critical values per policy and procedure; performs tests within established time frames; conducts laboratory testing in sections including Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; performs blood bank procedures including cross matching, AB IDs, and dispensing of blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers per procedures.
- Performs, analyzes, and records QC according to policy and procedure following CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO guidelines; performs and records Performance Improvement indicators and reports results.
- Performs daily and periodic preventative maintenance with documentation; troubleshoots minor problems and initiates service calls as needed; orders or notifies assigned associate and restocks supplies/reagents; reviews policy and procedure manuals; dates reagents and discards expired reagents.
- Takes responsibility for seeking and achieving professional growth and continued education.
- Assists in training new associates and students in Laboratory practices.
- Follows CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA standards; follows established protocols for safety, infection control, security, compliance, and use of hazardous materials.
- Utilizes LIS and HIS computer systems to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.
- Completes annual competency assessment successfully and by assigned date.
- Education/Skills –
Associates Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting CLIA 42
CFR
493.1489; or official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course (≥50 weeks) with military MLS role
; or 60 semester hours or equivalent with specified course requirements; and laboratory training including clinical laboratory training program approved by ABHES/NAACLS or three months documented laboratory training in each specialty for high complexity testing. - Experience – No experience required for graduates of NAACLS-accredited programs; or six months of approved clinical laboratory experience including rotation through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Urinalysis/Body Fluids; (meets AMT MLT eligibility).
- Licenses/Certifications – Louisiana state licensure required; new graduates who are Board Certified or eligible may apply (must complete Board Certification within 1 year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
