Medical Lab Technician – Mt. Pleasant Emergency Care Center

Summary: Performs clinical testing in assigned sections such as the general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology sections. Duties include accurate and timely results, quality control, performance improvement, proficiency testing, and preventative maintenance of equipment. Recognizes abnormal critical values and follows guidelines for notifying medical team members. Performs clerical, general, and phlebotomy duties related to daily laboratory operations and provides/dispenses blood products as requested by medical staff.

• Ensure company philosophy and core values are evident in customer service.
• Collect, handle, and process specimens: obtain blood specimens via venipuncture or fingerstick, identify and label accurately, respond to pneumatic tube system, and process specimens according to procedure manuals.
• Report results: recognize errors or improbable results, take appropriate action, report critical values per policy, and perform tests within established time frames across Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, UR, and Microbiology sections.
• Perform and record quality control, performance improvement indicators, and reports following CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO guidelines.
• Conduct and document daily and periodic preventative maintenance, troubleshoot minor problems, initiate service calls, and restock supplies/reagents.
• Pursue professional growth and continued education.
• Assist in training new associates and students in laboratory practices.
• Follow CAP, AABB, compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA standards.
• Follow protocols for safety, infection control, security, and hazardous materials.
• Utilize LIS and HIS computer systems for laboratory results.
• Complete annual competency assessment successfully by the assigned date.

• Associate’s degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting CLIA §42 CFR 493.1489.
• Successfully complete an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks and hold the military enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician).
• 60 semester hours or equivalent, including either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses that include six semester hours each of chemistry and biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
• Laboratory training: completion of an ABHES, NAACLS‑approved training program or, at least, three months documented laboratory training in each specialty where high‑complexity testing is performed.

• No experience required for graduates of an accredited clinical laboratory training program.
• Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including rotations through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids within the last five years.

• Louisiana requires State Licensure.
• New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible, completing Board Certification within one year of hire (Louisiana excluded).
