The Labor and Delivery RN is expected to adhere to the Texas Nursing Practice Act, Board regulations and all applicable federal, state and local laws. The RN provides nondiscriminatory nursing services to all patients and is accountable for coordinating patient care, ensuring standards of safety and patient rights are met, collaborating with the multidisciplinary team, and supporting patient education and discharge planning.
EssentialFunctions
- Provides age‑appropriate care.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skill in the assessment and care of antepartum, intrapartum, newly delivered, and postpartum women.
- Accurately evaluates labor progress and fetal heart rate tracings along with contraction patterns.
- Accurately assesses quantitative blood loss during and after delivery.
- Administers appropriate medications and treatments.
- Assesses and documents vital signs according to unit guidelines.
- Updates Care Plan as patient status changes.
- Educates patients and their families regarding all aspects of care.
- Intervenes appropriately based on patient coping abilities.
- Provides clear information to providers about patient status.
- Participates in unit process‑improvement projects and chart audits.
- Provides bedside hand‑off during transfers of care.
- Adheres to patient experience initiatives.
- Reports on time and departs from work on schedule.
- Assists with additional duties as assigned.
- Maintains composure while dealing with stress.
- Participates in unit‑specific quarterly education.
- Coordinates mother‑baby care as staffing and census require.
- Acts as surgical circulator during cesarean sections, tubal ligations and emergency procedures.
- Shows competence in pre‑operative and post‑anesthesia care.
- Demonstrates skill in obstetric triage and high‑risk obstetrical patient transitions.
- Takes unit call as needed as directed by the Director.
- Advocates family‑centered care.
- Follows TRMC vaccine policy as mandated by CMS.
- L&D, antepartum, or postpartum experience preferred.
- Registered Nurse licensed to practice in Texas.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) upon hire date.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) within 90 days of hire.
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) within 90 days of hire.
- AWHONN Fetal Monitoring preferred.
Lifting and carrying: 1–100 lbs with varied time percentages. Bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching above and below the shoulder, and repetitive arm/hand actions are common. Standing for extended periods, walking, and moving on uneven or even surfaces occur frequently. The work environment is predominantly indoors, with exposure to occasional sharps, chemicals, and electrical hazards. Vision requirements include depth perception, color vision not required, and peripheral vision.
