Summary

The Mount Vernon - IL VA Clinic is seeking a Psychiatrist to join their Behavioral Health team! The position includes providing general clinical psychiatric services to Veterans, including on‑call and walk‑in services, diagnostic evaluations, medication management, and individual or group psychotherapy. The incumbent may also have direct clinical supervision of multidisciplinary staff and is expected to provide coverage for behavioral medicine clinical services in various formats.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic

Requirements
  • United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy)
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine from an approved school
  • Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in any U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia
  • Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Physical requirements including a pre‑employment physical, ability to lift 15‑44 pounds, reach above shoulder, push and pull, use both hands, walk and stand for 3‑5 hours, kneeling, and rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously
  • Visual requirements: near vision correctable to 13–16 inches, far vision correctable to 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other, depth perception and color discrimination, hearing aid permitted
Duties
  • Provision of general clinical psychiatric services to Veterans, including on‑call and walk‑in services
  • Conducting diagnostic evaluations, psychiatric consults, medication management, and individual or group psychotherapy
  • Providing direct clinical supervision of multidisciplinary staff as appropriate
  • Completing notes and encounters with the required Talent Management Systems training and ongoing professional practice examinations
  • Covering clinical services for the Chief of Behavioral Medicine, providing services via face‑to‑face, phone, CVT, and VVC as clinically appropriate
  • Managing the population of veterans from all military eras, with patients primarily in an outpatient setting but also in inpatient, community living, and residential rehabilitation programs
  • Applying standard and accepted clinical theories, techniques, and practices in treating patients, including specialty programs for PTSD, substance use, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and traumatic brain injury
  • Performing administrative and practical tasks related to mental health treatment settings
  • Adhering to a Monday‑Friday 8:00 am‑4:30 pm schedule with 50‑55 days of paid time off per year, traditional federal pension, and other benefits
