Maintenance Worker

Skagit Public Utility District is seeking a Maintenance Worker to perform a variety of heavy manual labor tasks in the maintenance and repair of PUD facilities and associated infrastructure.

Job Overview

Work is performed under adverse conditions, in all types of weather, and can be at any hour of the day or night (although normal schedules are set and consistent).

Essential Duties
  • Routine maintenance on fire hydrants, meters, valves, pump stations, reservoirs, buildings, mowing, clearing, and other areas as directed.
  • Locate, inspect, and perform maintenance on valves, hydrants, and meters based on maps, drawings, and sketches to gather asset-related information.
  • Perform limited pavement, site restoration, and environmental protection in and around construction sites.
Specialized Duties
  • New service installations, tie‑ins, leak detection and repair.
  • Resolve customer issues, investigations, and meter testing.
  • Installation and repair of customer water services of all sizes.
  • Water distribution system repairs, shutting down and repairing water mains, tapping water mains.
  • Investigate water theft, backflow, and other system risk issues.
Required Education & Experience
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • At least two (2) years of experience performing physical labor, preferably in connection with the maintenance and repair of underground utilities.
Certifications & Training (Preferred)
  • Water Distribution Manager 1 (WDM1) certification.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with tanker endorsement.
  • Cross Connection Control Specialist (CCS) certification.
  • Flagger card, Forklift certification, Competent Person/Cave‑In Protection training, Confined Space training, Asbestos Cement Pipe Work Practice and Procedure training.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
Physical Requirements

Typical duties include sitting, standing, walking, balancing, lifting, bending, kneeling, reaching overhead, pushing, pulling, crawling, climbing, twisting, gripping, driving, stooping, crouching, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. The incumbent must be capable of lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds infrequently, and up to 25 pounds frequently. Lifting objects heavier than 50 pounds will be accomplished using help from others or by mechanical means.

Compensation

& Benefits

This is a Union‑represented position. The salary range for a Maintenance Worker is $38.13 - $48.80 per hour. The anticipated hiring range is $38.13 - $44.22 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Benefits include medical, dental, vision (no cost to employee/dependents), life and disability coverage, PERS and Teamsters pension, deferred compensation, generous paid time off, holidays, and more. Benefits are equivalent to over 60% in additional compensation. A clothing stipend is also provided.
