PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSBILIITIES

  • Clinical care—Identifies and evaluates dental needs of individuals by conducting a dental history and reviewing their medical history; conducts oral exams of the hard and soft tissue of the mouth checking for decay, plaque accumulation and other anomalies; evaluates periodontal health by probing; performs scaling and root planning; administers oral prophylaxis and topical fluoride treatments; discusses causes and solutions to oral hygiene problems with patients;

    checks and maintains dental equipment and sharpens and sterilizes instruments.
  • Health Education—Presents to or provides dental educational materials to schools, community groups, and other interested parties. Plan/schedule/conduct in-service dental health programs. Teaches skills to individuals and groups for effective plaque removal.
  • Reviews annual dental objectives and maintains electronic dental records; plans, develops, and conducts dental health surveys and uses results to evaluate program effectiveness; reviews inventory of dental supplies and education material.
  • Program planning/operations—Assesses community dental health needs and helps develop and evaluate programs to meet those needs; coordinates program services with communities, schools, various agencies, and organizations to avoid duplication and to augment existing services.
