Assistant Professor — Political Science

The role
You will teach across BA and MA Political Science — political theory, Indian government and politics, international relations and public administration.
Postgraduate teaching is aligned to the UPSC/UPPSC Political Science optional  , which a substantial share of our students prepare for alongside the degree. That alignment is not incidental: for many students in this region, the civil services are the reason they chose the subject, and the department's job is to make degree study and examination preparation reinforce each other rather than run in parallel.
Full-time, on-site at Babatpur, Varanasi.

Responsibilities  Political theory    Teach   Western political thought   — the Greek tradition through the social contract theorists to Marx, Mill, Rawls and contemporary theory
Teach   Indian political thought   — Kautilya, the reform tradition, Gandhi, Ambedkar, Nehru, Lohia, Deendayal Upadhyaya, and the debates of the national movement
Teach core concepts: sovereignty, rights, liberty, equality, justice, democracy, power and legitimacy
Indian government and politics    Teach the   Indian Constitution   — framing, structure, fundamental rights, directive principles, and the amendment record
Teach institutions and processes:
Parliament, executive, judiciary, federalism, Centre-State relations, and local government
Teach political processes: parties, elections, coalition politics, pressure groups, and social movements
Teach state politics with attention to   Uttar Pradesh   — caste and electoral politics, regional parties, and the state's role in national outcomes
International relations and public administration    Teach IR theory, Indian foreign policy, international organisations, and contemporary global politics
Teach public administration — theories of organisation, bureaucracy, policy process, and administrative reform in India
Teach comparative politics and comparative government papers as the syllabus requires
Examination alignment and mentoring    Align MA teaching to the UPSC/UPPSC Political Science and International Relations optional syllabus   — paper structure, answer-writing standards, and the analytical style the examination rewards
Run answer-writing practice and evaluation for civil services aspirants
Mentor students toward   NET/JRF  , M.Phil and PhD admission
Guide MA dissertations from question formulation through to viva
Classroom conduct — read carefully    Political Science at degree level requires teaching contested questions — communalism, reservation, federal disputes, foreign policy choices —   as frameworks of analysis, not as settled positions.
Students must leave able to construct the strongest case on more than one side of a question, whatever the teacher's own view.
Maintain a classroom in which students of every background, caste and community can speak without cost
Keep personal political affiliation out of teaching and assessment
Assessment and department    Set and evaluate internal assessments aligned to MGKVP examination patterns
Contribute to departmental research output and, where possible, publication
Contribute to institutional academic and co-curricular activity, including debates, model parliament and current-affairs forums

Qualifications  Essential    MA in Political Science   from a UGC-recognised university
UGC NET or PhD in Political Science — required for this appointment
Ability to teach   political theory and Indian government   at degree level with equal command
Familiarity with the UPSC/UPPSC Political Science and International Relations optional syllabus
Ability to teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate level
Demonstrated capacity to teach contested political questions analytically rather than positionally
Fluency in   Hindi and English   — students come largely from Purvanchal and Bihar, and teaching is bilingual. Many civil services aspirants here write their papers in Hindi.
Preferred    Prior PG teaching experience
Experience coaching or mentoring civil services aspirants, particularly answer-writing evaluation
Publications in political science, public policy, or Indian politics
Depth in a specialisation — IR, public administration, comparative politics, or political theory
Experience guiding NET/JRF candidates
Familiarity with Hindi-medium academic terminology in the discipline
Experience running debates, model parliament, or student political forums
Remuneration   As per institutional norms, commensurate with qualification and experience. Discussed at interview.
