This position is considered a Safety‑Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. The purpose of this position is to ensure the safety of citizens and property by preventing, reporting, investigating, and analyzing crime within the City's limits.
Essential Functions- Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business.
- Patrol assigned zone and interact with citizens.
- Respond to call for service.
- Prevent, detect, and investigate criminal activity.
- Enforce state and federal laws, city ordinances, and issue citations.
- Assist other officers in active investigations.
- Investigate crash and crime scenes, document calls, file reports, and prepare case files for judicial proceedings.
- Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects.
- Issue search warrants and conduct searches of persons and property.
- Prepare court cases, communicate with district attorney’s office, and appear in court to testify.
- Inspect and maintain assigned equipment.
- Attend training sessions.
- Provide security at community events.
- Read and understand technical instructions, procedures, manuals, and charts to solve practical problems, compose routine reports and specialized reports, forms, and business letters with proper format; speak compound sentences with normal grammar and word form.
- Understand and validly enforce federal and state laws and local ordinances while exercising good judgment and reasonable discretion.
- Possess temperament and good judgment to effectively and diplomatically deal with all members of the public, including those who are irate and unreasonable.
- Perform other work as assigned.
- Be a certified trainer or certifying official with a nationally recognized canine training association.
- Have background in law enforcement canine training techniques, such as obedience training, patrol work, non‑aggressive tracking, narcotic detection, explosive detection, and cadaver detection.
- Participate in the selection and training of a canine, establishing and attending formal training as necessary to prepare the canine for duty.
- Host and instruct weekly training for all Murfreesboro canine teams and other department members as needed.
- Create and maintain all training records for Murfreesboro Police Department canine teams.
- Maintain yearly certification for each canine team discipline through a nationally recognized canine training association.
- Maintain records on K9 use including training, certification(s), and deployments.
- Coordinate veterinarian care, immunizations, routine care, and other required for canines.
- Serve as the liaison on matters pertaining to the K9 unit.
- Provide guidance and professional development to canine handlers.
- Maintain and oversee the care and maintenance of training equipment.
- Complete and disseminate statistical reports as assigned.
- Ensure all canine handlers complete the proper documentation regarding canine use.
- Establish positive relationships within Murfreesboro Police canine teams.
- Law enforcement duties: emphasize understanding current Fourth Amendment updates, law enforcement canine TCA updates, and court rulings that may affect the canine program.
- Develop partnerships with other law enforcement agencies for additional training opportunities.
- Coordinate safety measures: collaborate with school administrators to develop and implement safety protocols, emergency response plans, and crisis management procedures; provide assistance, advice, and guidance in the development of threat assessments and safety plans.
- Regularly patrol school campuses to deter criminal activity, address safety concerns, and maintain a visible police presence; promote and facilitate school environments that are safe from crime and disorder.
