Summary ofJob Duties and Responsibilities:
The Patrol Officer must be a sworn law enforcement officer meeting Kentucky Law Enforcement Council (KLEC) Police Officer Professional Standards (POPS) certification requirements. Responsibilities include conducting vehicle and foot patrols on campus, enforcing laws and regulations, serving warrants, conducting investigations, and documenting activities. The role requires knowledge of Kentucky law, the KYOPS reporting system, and federal laws. Duties vary across shifts and include emergency response, safety observation, and community engagement.
The officer must be prepared to learn university-specific procedures, maintain compliance with reporting standards, and work flexible hours including holidays and weekends.
Education Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least two years of patrol experience, which can be through security or police work, or college credit exchange.
- Alertness, decision-making under pressure, operation of patrol vehicles, firearms, and equipment.
- Good public relations, communication skills, and ability to work with others.
- Must meet KLEC standards: U.S. citizen, 21+, no felony convictions, valid driver’s license, and pass medical, background, psychological, and physical tests. Attendance at Kentucky Police Academy may be required.
- Two years of college coursework.
- Completion of Kentucky Police Academy or equivalent, and additional law enforcement training such as NIMS/NRP, CIT, and weapons training.
