IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

BASIC FUNCTION:

The function of a Laborer is to perform work as directed by the Grade Checker or Foreman on the project. You must be comfortable using hand tools when required, completing tasks safely, accurately, and efficiently, according to the plan.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• The laborer may spend long hours standing and/or walking.
• The physical demands may include lifting, pushing, pulling and/or carrying objects which may exceed 25lbs or greater.
• Working in hot or cold environments.
• Working around loud machinery and tools.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

The Laborer reports to the Grade Checker and the Foreman.

Laborer I

Prerequisites:

• Can show up consistently on time with proper PPE (vest, boots, glasses, hard hat)
• Has a good attitude, takes direction well, and communicates schedule changes
• Brings or is willing to get basic tools: square shovel, folding ruler in tenths

Required Skills:

• Follows direction and stays productive on site
• Can shovel, sweep, and keep work areas clean
• Understands basic site awareness and safety near heavy equipment
• Can count import/export truck loads and collect tickets
• Can use a ruler to convert tenths to inches
• Able to knock down and grade planter areas

Laborer II

Prerequisites:

• Completed Laborer I or has equivalent experience
• Communicates well with team and foreman about needs, materials, and concerns
• Can work independently and stay ahead of site needs
• Has or is willing to bring tools: round shovel, rake, pickaxe, sledgehammer, tape measure

Required Skills:

• Safely works near skid steers, backhoes, blades, and excavators
• Can clean up edges and curbs and maintain staking
• Reads ruler/tape in tenths and understands cuts/fills
• Can run and check hubs
• Basic knowledge of excavation and grading principles

Laborer III

Prerequisites:

• Completed Laborer I & II or has hands-on finish work and equipment experience
• Has initiative, understands production goals, and documents jobsite details
• Demonstrates leadership qualities

Required Skills:

• Can labor alongside machines during finish grade work
• Knows how to save/replace hubs and maintain a clean final product
• Can set elevations using laser, string line, and swedes
• Operates:
  • Water truck
  • Roller
  • Skid steer (for trash, cleanup, light grading)
  • Skip loader (material handling, cleanup)
• Understands basic grade checking and fill management

Laborer IV

Prerequisites:

• Completed Laborer I-III or has strong leadership and grading experience
• Comfortable supervising others and working without oversight
• Has full tool set (includes banjo, equipment keys, measuring tools)

Required Skills:

• Reads staking terms (PL, TC, CF, FG, FS) and understands layout
• Sets up and uses laser and peep site for grade checking
• Operates loader and works safely with demolition tools (cutting torch, whacker, saws)
• Knows how to pothole for utilities
• Makes independent decisions and supports training junior laborers
• Understands compaction and soil handling
