Position Summary:

The Radiation Therapist assists physicians by treating patients with prescribed doses of ionizing radiation supplied and controlled through specialized radiation equipment according to established policies.

What the Radiation Therapist will do:
  • Review patient’s medical charts for prescription, treatment time and prescribed dose. Confer with physicians as necessary to clarify orders.
  • Prepare treatment room and equipment, position patient, provide procedure explanation and information, and monitor patient.
  • Reinforce Radiation Oncologist’s advice to patients regarding side effects to treatment and care.
  • Perform daily warm‑ups and performance‑improvement monitoring of all radiation‑producing equipment.
  • Pour heated metal alloys into molds to fabricate radiation blocks used to define treatment fields on patients; cut blocks utilizing power tools for final shaping.
  • Perform simulation duties for tumor localization, for brachytherapy dosimetry, and document information.
  • Recognize equipment malfunctions, perform minor equipment repairs, and contact authorized service representatives as needed.
  • Check daily treatment MU and deliver prescribed dose.
  • Ensure all calculations are double‑checked prior to treatment and chart audited within three transfer by physics.
  • Prepare port films on a weekly basis or as needed, and ensure that any necessary changes are implemented.
  • Transport in‑patients to and from Oncology Unit.
  • Attend departmental meetings and technical meetings.
What the Radiation Therapist will need:
  • Registration as a Radiation Therapy Technologist.
  • Completion of a minimum of two years of occupationally specific education beyond high school or associate’s degree in Radiography or a closely related field plus three to six months of on‑the‑job training.
  • The analytical ability to resolve complex problems requiring the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles and in‑depth, experience‑based knowledge.
