Perinatal Patient Safety Nurse role at Trinity Health

The Perinatal Safety Nurse functions as a clinical expert, educator, consultant, researcher and program coordinator to collaborate with department leadership, nurses and physicians in the development and implementation of the department's perinatal safety program.

Position Summary: This position demonstrates mastery in theoretical frameworks including change, systems, persuasion, influence and collaboration. The Perinatal Safety Nurse serves as a leader related to the continuous clinical and professional development of nursing staff and implementation of evidence based practice innovations, consistent with Magnet Hospitals for nursing.

The Perinatal Safety Nurse will serve as a change agent promoting a culture of high team reliability and rapid response, ensuring the provision of care is standardized to current evidence based practices, in effort to promote quality of care and minimize risk of preventable patient harm for mothers and their newborns.

This position will primarily support the Labor and delivery, Post partum, and Special Care Nursery.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a patient safety advocate and clinical expert in obstetrics. Keeps abreast of changing national standards of clinical practice and safety literature.
  • Disseminates pertinent safety and specialty related information to team.
  • Participates in patient safety huddles and administrative walk rounds.
  • Presents patient and staff safety concerns to appropriate clinical forums.
  • Contributes to performance review activities of departmental staff.
  • Assists and supports the healthcare team when an adverse event or untoward outcome occurs.
  • Monitors clinical outcomes and drives change. Maintains database of records reviewed, issues identified and plans of correction.
  • Conducts multidisciplinary quality review of care processes and outcomes with collaborative feedback to colleagues.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Preferred:
    Master's Degree in Nursing
  • Current RN licensure in the State of Michigan.
  • Current National Certification Center certification in Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) and Inpatient Obstetrics certification required within 6 months of hire
  • Association of Women's Health, Obstetrics and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) membership required within 6 months of assuming position.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) required.
