Research Scientist — Annis Water Resources Institute, Grand Valley State University

The Annis Water Resources Institute is seeking to hire a collaborative, PhD-level scientist whose research program falls within the aquatic sciences. We are open to hiring in any area of the aquatic sciences but have special interest in individuals working in watershed science or lake ecosystem ecology. We are particularly interested in candidates who take a quantitative approach to their research.

The Annis Water Resources Institute (AWRI) is a world-class research facility situated on Muskegon Lake in Muskegon, MI, on the shores of Lake Michigan. The institute houses a dozen faculty, numerous research staff, and a robust graduate program. Located 30 miles from the main Grand Valley State University campus, AWRI maintains state-of-the-art analytical and molecular laboratories, a mesocosm facility, and two research vessels.

The successful candidate would work closely with Dr. Stuart Jones while developing their own independent research and participating in collaborative projects  position will be a 100% research and day-to-day duties will include data analysis & modeling, publishing, submission of proposals for external funding, and mentoring of students. The position will begin with an initial one-year appointment, but funding is available in perpetuity.

  • a maximum two-page research statement that describes their past research experience and plans for collaborative research at AWRI, and

Required qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in aquatic ecology, limnology, watershed science or related field
  • a record of publishing in the peer-reviewed literature
  • fluency in the R programming language
  • experience mentoring undergraduate students in research

Preferred qualifications:

  • experience with maximum likelihood or Bayesian inference
  • prior success in garnering external funding
  • familiarity with developing process-based models
  • experience analyzing long-term datasets
  • demonstrated success working in a collaborative setting
