Water Distribution Maintenance Leader I

Purpose of the Classification: Responsible for the participation of and oversight of semi‑skilled and skilled maintenance and construction work involving the City water distribution system.
Essential Tasks- Operate hand tools, power tools, light trucks, and small equipment.
- Oversee and participate in the operation and maintenance of the water distribution system.
- Perform lead work and direct a group of workers on planned and scheduled maintenance activities involving small to medium equipment.
- Perform special worksite and traffic setup.
- Perform hydrostatic and bacteriological testing of new water lines.
- Locate water lines for contractors and plumbers.
- Perform routine inspections on new water installations.
- Monitor and complete all related paperwork.
- Dig ditches and trenches, lay pipe, install and repair valves.
- Perform other work as necessary and/or as assigned.
- Report to work on a regular and timely basis.

Reporting RelationshipsThe Water Distribution Maintenance Leader I reports directly to the Water Distribution Maintenance Leader II. The Water Distribution Maintenance Leader I oversees the work of the Public Works Equipment Operator I and Water Distribution Maintenance Worker II.
QualificationsTraining and
Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent, and three (3) years of experience as a trades helper or maintenance laborer in any construction or maintenance trades, preferably including some experience involving operation of light to medium construction equipment with at least one (1) year of experience leading and coordinating or providing general crew oversight or supervision.
Knowledge, Abilities, and
Skills:
Considerable knowledge of manual labor work practices, methods, tools and materials of varied, semi‑skilled maintenance work; and considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions; ability to lead a group of workers performing manual labor for extended periods of time, in varying weather conditions; ability to use and instruct others in the use of mechanical tools and equipment;
ability to operate and instruct others in the use of automotive and power equipment; ability to read and interpret plans and specifications; ability to plan and oversee the work of semi‑skilled and skilled workers; and the ability to understand and influence the behavior of others within the organization, customers, or the public in order to achieve job objectives and cause action or understanding.
Physical requirements include occasional walking and standing; frequent lifting and carrying up to fifty (50) pounds; occasional lifting and carrying more than sixty (60) pounds; frequent reaching, handling and twisting; occasional balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling and climbing; vision, speech and hearing sufficient to perform essential tasks. Punctuality and reasonable attendance is essential. Must submit to drug screening and fitness to work physical exam.
Licensesand Certificates
Possession of a valid Oklahoma Class D driver’s license is required. Must possess a class “C” Water license issued by the State Department of Health, or ability to obtain license within nine (9) months of appointment.
Working EnvironmentWork is primarily outdoors, may travel to other City locations as required. Exposure to wet, hot, cold and/or humid conditions. Requires ability to work weekends and holidays as required and maintain a stand‑by status.
