Job SummaryThe Roadway Engineer will be based in Myrtle Beach, SC and play a pivotal role in the design, analysis, and execution of roadway projects, ensuring adherence to SCDOT regulations and standards. Your technical expertise and familiarity with SCDOT policies and procedures will be essential in delivering safe, efficient, and sustainable roadway solutions.
Minimum experience:
7+ years in roadway engineering with extensive knowledge of SCDOT design practices.
- Develop effective/innovative designs for interstate widening, interchange/intersection improvements, traffic management, and other State and County highway improvement projects.
- Assist in business development by contributing proposals and business opportunities.
- Coordinate execution and control of roadway design projects to achieve budgets and schedules from start‑up through final design.
- Collaborate with contractors, vendors, and other consultants to ensure compliance with engineering standards, codes, and project requirements.
- Apply AASHTO and SCDOT design criteria and specifications.
- Provide internal quality control for construction drawings, design calculations, and specifications.
- Work with Project Management to ensure projects are completed on schedule and under budget; independently manage project tasks.
- Maintain organized documentation of design files, drawings, and construction submittals.
- Communicate with clients, environmental agencies, and federal entities regarding construction implications.
- Prepare and present reports, drawings, and technical documents related to roadway projects, ensuring precision and clarity.
- Utilize CAD software and other tools to create and modify roadway plans, profiles, and cross‑sections.
- Perform engineering calculations and analyses to validate design choices and optimize roadway performance.
- Stay updated with SCDOT policies, regulations, and industry best practices, applying this knowledge to promote compliance and innovation.
- Assist in preparing cost estimates, project schedules, and bid packages.
- Collaborate with stakeholders—including government agencies, contractors, and the public—to address concerns and provide technical support.
- Conduct regular field inspections to monitor construction progress, identify issues, and ensure adherence to specifications and safety standards.
- Experience with Design‑Bid‑Build projects is highly desired.
- Strong familiarity with SCDOT and South Carolina County projects.
- Proficiency in Micro Station, Open Roads, and Project Wise.
- Strong understanding of SCDOT policies, guidelines, and design standards.
- Sound knowledge of roadway design principles, geometric design, and transportation engineering.
- Experience with conducting site visits, collecting data, and performing field inspections.
- Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
- Effective communication and presentation abilities for conveying complex technical information.
- Detail‑oriented mindset with a commitment to high‑quality work.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple projects concurrently.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
- Must complete a pre‑employment screening; ICE is a drug‑free workplace.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in South Carolina (bonus for additional SE states).
- 7–10 years of roadway engineering experience, specifically with SCDOT projects.
