Professor, Criminology
Duties:
Vancouver Island University's Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for a permanent half-time faculty position in the Criminology Department. The Faculty seeks an excellent teacher who brings applied expertise in criminal law to undergraduate instruction.
The position involves teaching a range of undergraduate courses in criminology, criminal law, and criminal procedure. The successful appointee will demonstrate a commitment to maintaining current knowledge in these areas and an ability to integrate legal practice, theory, and critical analysis in the classroom. Candidates who are enthusiastic about mentoring students and supporting their academic development within a criminology context are particularly encouraged to apply.
Teaching responsibilities will align with a half-time appointment. The position requires teaching at both the Nanaimo and Cowichan campuses.
The appointee is expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching, a strong commitment to student learning and success, and a willingness to contribute to departmental, Faculty, and institutional service and governance. Evidence of teaching effectiveness and professional engagement may include student evaluations, teaching records, and other relevant supporting documentation.
The faculty member will teach both foundational and specialized law-related courses within the Criminology program and will assess student learning in accordance with departmental and Faculty of Social Sciences norms.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.
Required Qualifications:LL.B./J.D. from an appropriately accredited institution. Active membership in a LL.B. or J.D. from an appropriately accredited institution;
PhD completed or near completion in Criminology, Sociology, Law, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution; demonstrated excellence in teaching a range of Criminology courses; and demonstrated proficiency with instructional and educational technologies relevant to the position.
LL.B. or J.D. from an appropriately accredited institution;
PhD completed in Criminology, Sociology, Law, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution; experience practicing law, particularly in criminal law or related areas; demonstrated excellence in teaching a range of Criminology courses; and demonstrated proficiency with instructional and educational technologies relevant to the position.
