Duties
The Modern Languages Studies Department at Vancouver Island University is committed to high standards in teaching, student engagement, and community connection. We offer language courses in French, Spanish, and Japanese, including a two-year Certificate Program in Language and Culture for each language, emphasizing the development of linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding to meet a wide range of student needs and goals.
ResponsibilitiesTeach the four sections of introductory and intermediate courses in the Fall and Spring terms, including Beginning Spanish I, Beginning Spanish II, and Intermediate Spanish I. Undertake assessment and placement of students in the Spanish language program. Demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, such as student support;
institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and skilled activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.
- M.A. in Spanish language or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution.
- Evidence of excellence in teaching at the post‑secondary level.
- Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish.
- Ph.D. in Spanish language or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution.
- Experience with instructional technology and its applications to classroom teaching.
