Duties:

The Modern Languages Studies Department at Vancouver Island University is committed to high standards in teaching, student engagement, and community connection. We offer language courses in French, Spanish, and Japanese, including a two-year Certificate Program in Language and Culture for each language, emphasizing the development of linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding to meet a wide range of student needs and goals.

The Modern Languages Studies Department invites applications for a half-time Sessional Instructor in Japanese Language. Responsibilities include teaching two sections of Basic Japanese I in the Fall term and one section of Basic Japanese II and possibly one section of Introduction to East Asian Cultures in the Spring term, and undertaking the assessment and placement of students in the Japanese language program.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

M.A. in Japanese from an appropriately accredited institution. Candidates must provide evidence of excellence in teaching at the post-secondary level, as well as native or near-native proficiency in Japanese.

Ph.D. in Japanese language or a related field from an appropriately accredited university. Experience with instructional technology and its applications to classroom teaching will be considered an asset.
