Summary

The Literacy/Numeracy Support and PE/Options Teacher provides evidence-based literacy assessment, intervention, and instructional support for students requiring additional assistance in developing foundational reading and writing skills. This position is responsible for delivering the PE curriculum and options, such as art and music, across all grades. Working collaboratively with classroom teachers, families, and school-based teams, this role delivers targeted small-group and individual instruction, monitors student progress through ongoing assessment, and supports the implementation of high-quality literacy practices aligned with the Science of Reading and inclusive educational frameworks.

The purpose of this position is to plan for, deliver, and monitor educational services for Snaw-naw-as Community Members that adhere to the philosophy, goals, and mission statement of our Snaw-naw-as vision and goals document. The successful candidate will be an expert in implementing elementary education that incorporates current research-based strategies and programs across the disciplines. The successful candidate will maintain professional standards and confidentiality practices as well as an ability to be flexible in environments of a growing and developing school.

This position will start as a term position from August 31, 2026, to June 30, 2027. Review and extension of contract to a permanent, full-time position based on successful integration of our school's purpose based on the Snaw-naw-as vision, mission, and values document and will be reviewed at the end of the school year.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Utilize the BC curriculum and apply it to learning for intermediate grades
  • Deliver BC's PE curriculum and options, such as art and music, across all grades
  • Plan, prepare, and provide instruction according to the BC school curriculum
  • Use of Indigenous ways of knowing and apply these teachings to BC curriculum
  • Develop age-appropriate lesson plans that scaffold for the diverse needs of students
  • Deliver evidence-based literacy instruction in smalls group or individually
  • Maintain attendance and encourage regular classroom presence of all students
  • Implement Land Based education
  • Perform daily prep work ensuring a tidy classroom with enough materials, visual aids, displays, and school-based activities for the day
  • Create on-going student assessment of and for learning
  • Communicate student progress with families
  • Collaborate with colleagues for the benefits of the school
  • Maintain confidential student and teacher files
  • Manage parent communications and learning updates that include examples of students learning
  • Flexibility of instructional approach to accommodate coverage with classroom teachers when needed

  • Build on child's identified strengths
  • Support learning by implementing independent education plans or learning profiles
  • Ability to work positively and communicate with support staff and work together to create recommendations for student support such as Speech Language Therapy, OT, and/or Behaviour Intervention
  • Report on child's changing needs and adjust learning plans when needed
  • Supports students' use of educational technology and/or various assistive communication modalities
  • Support students in learning communication skills and social/emotional strategies with both teachers and peers
  • Support cultural and spiritual learning, including; singing, drumming, dance, language land, and medicines through diverse methods
  • Understand the child’s diverse physical needs when playing and in transition times
  • Implement physical inclusion strategies
