Duties:
Reporting to the Director, Centre for Experiential Learning and Student Engagement, the Coordinator, Community Building serves as a key provider of supports and services related to the student experience  Coordinator, Community Building supports employees and students to develop and deliver programs that provide engagement and retention experiences aligned with the University's Strategic Plan:
People, Place and Potential. The Coordinator, Community Building works closely with the members of the Centre for Experiential Learning & Student Engagement team, Student Affairs, and broader VIU Community to ensure that tools and information are available to facilitate activities that support the student experience and retention initiatives for domestic, Indigenous, and international students. The Coordinator, Community Building is responsible for the following and other related duties as assigned:

Supervises student staff and volunteers

Liaises with students and employees to inform the facilitation of learning programs, activities, and events that contribute positively to the student experience at VIU

Develops and implements a repository of tools and information for stakeholders designed to support activities, including guidelines for program development

Develops, plans, and facilitates retention events and initiatives to the student experience as directed

Develops and implements a communications plan, focused on sharing activity information with all members of the VIU community; this includes but is not limited to website content, social media, newsletters, and reporting on activities

Develops, records, maintains, and enacts departmental systems and procedures

Assists in the preparation of accountability reports, program development, and program assessments

Coordinates the development and delivery of orientation programming for students

Supports the VIU campus community to deliver events housed within the Student Affairs portfolio (e.g., RockVIU, WorldVIU Days, Global Citizens Forum, etc)

Maintains appropriate confidentiality in compliance with VIU protocols and procedures

Applies student development theory to all aspects of the role

Required Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree. A minimum of three years of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Proven ability to work independently

Proven ability to work as a member of a team in a collaborative manner

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

High level of oral and written communication skills

Proven ability to exercise good judgment and problem-solving skills

Proven ability to prioritize multiple project and activity demands

Knowledge of student development theory

Demonstrated experience working with culturally diverse populations or groups

Demonstrated experience with developing repositories and information sharing tools

Demonstrated experience with developing and implementing communications plans

Demonstrated experience with delivering communications to a broad and diverse community, using a variety of media and tools, including social media and websites

Proven ability and demonstrated experience in developing and implementing program plans, learning outcomes and assessments

Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and ability to apply that knowledge to implement appropriate supports and services

Demonstrated experience with developing and delivering orientation programs, including ongoing orientations

Proficiency in general office software systems (MS Office, file-sharing, web design, database)

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of VIU financial, purchasing, and human resources processes and familiarity with campus group (currently used to managed VIU's Co-Curricular Record Program), and/or Orbis Communications

Certificate in event and/or project management

Professional experience in student, co-curricular record and event account practices

Member of CACUSS

Facilitated and/or participated in Student Orientation Programs

Unit4/FIS system experience

Experience working within an educational/post-secondary setting

Experience studying, volunteering or living abroad
