Instructor, Theatre History

For the past 50 years the Theatre Department has been training professionals in the entertainment industry. Inside of our two-year program, we work closely with the students in an ensemble setting. Bringing in industry professionals, as well as working closely with the arts community, we supply our students with an array of experience that prepares them for work in the field.

Small class sizes, community opportunities, and individual support makes the Theatre Department at VIU an ideal place of employment for anyone in the performing arts.

Duties:

The successful candidate will develop, prepare and deliver lectures, and seminars to students in the Theatre Department commencing with the Spring 2027 semester and then the Fall 2027 semester subject to a successful evaluation in the Spring.

Faculty are responsible for preparing and delivering classes, designing and grading student assignments and tests, facilitating the students' integration of theory and practice, holding weekly office hours, and evaluating student progress. Secondary responsibilities include record keeping and general department curriculum maintenance as pertains to the courses being taught.

The following two courses are timetabled in the Spring 2027 semester:

THEA 112:
Theatre History I
Tuesday and Thursday 10:00-11:30

THEA 212:
Theatre History III
Tuesday and Thursday 13:00-14:30

The Fall 2027 courses will be (possibly subject to change):

THEA 111:
Introduction to Theatre
Tuesday and Thursday 10:00-11:30

THEA 211:
Theatre History II
Tuesday and Thursday 13:00-14:30

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in related field from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum four years' recent experience. A combination of education and experience may be considered for candidates with exceptional demonstrated experience.

• Education and experience with related fields to course description
• Recent teaching or lecturing experience with adults at the post-secondary level
• Strong general background in theatre and/or performing arts
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills working as a team member
• Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Sensitivity to the needs of a wide variety of adult students

Preferred Qualifications:

• PHD or Master's degree in Theatre History or a related discipline
• Industry Affiliations in appropriate area
• Experience developing course material and curriculum
• Experience with publishing course material to a Learning Management System
