Indigenous Family Support Worker
The IFS Worker will work in the standards, philosophy and mission statement of the Tillicum Lelum Aboriginal Friendship Centre, and will be under the supervision and direction of the Management Team. The FSW will be responsible for providing support to Aboriginal families ensuring that the children’s well‑being and social support are seen to. The incumbent will also work with the organization team providing an integrated service to the target population.
Roles and ResponsibilitiesThe Family Support Worker will provide counselling, parenting support, intervention and advocacy services, and coordination of resources and development of community support to clients referred by the Ministry for Children and Families and other services in the community.
Duties Include- Accept referrals from the Ministry for Children and Families, and other services in the Nanaimo community.
- Provide counselling support to families on an individual basis, setting goals and treatment plans for the families and children, ensuring families follow plans directed by the Ministry for Children and Families.
- Implement family support plans in cooperation with the Ministry for Children and Families Social Workers, Health Centre services, families and other service providers in the community.
- Assist in developing child management and other necessary parenting skills that support the families’ plan.
- Empower families to make changes that benefit their lives and act as an advocate for families and children by connecting them to supports in the community, including extended family, community and resources.
- Provide a referral service connecting families to other services and conduct referral follow‑ups.
- Support families by participating in family case conferences, family meetings, court and court case conferencing.
- Participate in developing prevention programmes and providing group programmes that support families in maintaining a healthy family environment.
- Provide a vehicle connecting families to their Aboriginal culture and tradition, supporting parenting skills.
- Connect with walk‑in clients, providing intake assessment and acting as a referral service for clients needing family support.
- Facilitate groups as appropriate.
- The IFS Worker may be asked to provide other responsibilities that support Aboriginal families healing and the organisation’s initiative, as directed by the Supervisor.
Job Type: Full‑time
Pay: $28.00-$33.00 per hour
