This open recruitment is being conducted to fill one (1) full-time vacancy for the position of Legal Clerk, which may be filled at the I or II level, depending on the qualifications, for Napa County's Probation Department. The eligibility list established by this recruitment may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, limited term, and extra help vacancies for up to one year.

the Position

The Legal Clerk class series performs a variety of legal clerical tasks, processes or assists in the preparation of legal documents, and provides direct clerical support for a County department involved in the processing of legal documents, and may provide clerical support to an attorney or judge. Typically, the Legal Clerk I performs duties in one area of law (civil, criminal, domestic relations, recording) and performs a variety of routine to moderately complex legal clerical tasks.

Typically, the Legal Clerk II performs complex legal clerical tasks in more than one area of law (e.g., civil, criminal, traffic, domestic relations), and performs a variety of responsible and complex legal clerical tasks under general direction.

The Napa County Probation Department operates adult and juvenile court-related services in the areas of investigation and supervision with the mission to enforce court orders to inspire positive change, transform the lives of offenders, victims, and families, and promote community safety. The Department is also responsible for the overall operation of the County’s Juvenile Hall, which provides custody, counseling, medical care and guidance of delinquent and custodial youth in a variety of programs.

Position Requirements

To qualify for the Legal Clerk I/II classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities. A desirable combination is:

  • Legal Clerk I

    Experience:

    One year of general clerical experience.
  • Legal Clerk II

    Experience:

    One year of legal clerical experience.
  • Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, including or supplemented by general clerical training.
  • License: Certain positions assigned to this class may require possession of a valid California Driver's License.

* Any license, certification, or registration required for this position shall be maintained (i.e. active and in good standing) at all times during employment with Napa County. For continued employment with Napa County, you must maintain such license, certification, or registration to meet the minimum qualifications of this position.

  • Oral Exam (Panel Interview) – Tentatively scheduled the week of February 9, 2026
  • Establish Eligibility List – Tentatively scheduled the week of February 16, 2026 (Only the most qualified candidates from the oral panel exam will be placed on the eligibility list and may be considered to fill positions for up to one year.)
