Responsibilities

Administers the County Architectural Code, provides architectural expertise to various County committees, applicants and residents, and reviews projects for compliance with architectural and site design standards and guidelines; performs specialized professional work in the preparation of architectural plans, designs and specification for County buildings and structures. Employees in this classification also update and develop regulations regarding architecture and urban design as well as provide technical assistance to other County staff and public officials relative to urban design and architectural issues.

  • Reviews architectural building plans; reviews site plans for compliance with Architect Code; and negotiates with applicants regarding the extent of compliance with architectural design guidelines.
  • Selects architectural motifs for structures, subject to approval of administrative superiors and within the limits imposed by structural requirements.
  • Prepares preliminary plans and evaluations, renderings, general features and scale details.
  • Attends pre-application meetings; meets with project architect; meets with civil engineer and other professional consultants; and makes site visits.
  • Prepares final working drawings including architectural drawings, some of the engineering calculations and drawings, and plans for mechanical details such as plumbing, ventilation and lighting features.
  • Confers with other Engineering personnel engaged in the preparation of structural plans for a building, making recommendations and suggestions as to materials, construction, and-necessary adjustments in architectural design to fit structural requirements.
  • Inspects construction in the field by checking for conformity with plans and material specifications; inspects existing structures to determine need for alterations or improvements and prepares drawings for such changes.
  • Reviews Site Development Plan (SDP) plans for compliance with special district overlay regulations; reviews fence and awning permit; reviews building permit plans; and reviews and provides input regarding urban studies and special reports involving design issues.
  • Serves as a lead as assigned; responds to and resolves complex issues relating to building permits.
  • Conducts FEMA reviews for proposed building projects to assure compliance with building elevations and flood resistant methods and materials.
  • Troubleshoots inspection issues that may arise.
  • Research permit history as necessary.
  • Collaborates with others on projects as well as property/equipment improvements to determine best possible solutions to meet County requirements.
  • Confers, advises, and provides technical design assistance to committees, other Divisions, and outside organizations on urban design projects.
  • Draft ordinances and prepares Land Development Code amendments; prepares specific design review guidelines, graphics, and other documents for implementation of code amendments.
  • Assists in urban design of redevelopment areas and other urban design projects.
  • Coordinates and chairs various committees including Architectural Review Committee with Project Planner and other review agencies.
  • Responsible for presentations to professional organizations, agencies, and the Board of County Commissioners.
  • Provides training and reviews the work of coworkers.
  • Attends divisional meetings; attends special training and workshops.
  • Coordinates architectural review workload.
  • Responds to applicant/customer telephone and e-mail questions and comments; prepares written interpretations to customer inquiries.
Additional Functions
  • Performs damage assessments of structures after a storm or emergency.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or a closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of related experience.
  • Candidates without a related degree should possess an additional four (4) years of related experience.
  • Fingerprinting required.
Licenses/Certificates
  • State of Florida Architectural License preferred.
  • Salary offers above the minimum of the pay grade may be considered based on qualifications.
  • Essential Employees may be required to work during an undeclared emergency and/or declared emergency. On an incident-by-incident basis, the County’s Administrative Office will make the determination as to who will be required to work.
