Position Overview and Responsibilities

Delnor Wiggins State Park seeks a self‑motivated park service professional to provide visitor services, maintenance, protection, administration, and resource management. The applicant must possess good visitor service and administrative skills, work independently, and perform a variety of skilled trade functions using assorted equipment and tools. Rotating shifts—including evenings, weekends, and holidays—are required.

Roles and Responsibilities

Compliance – Adhere to Chapter 215.422, F.S. processing requirements. Failure to comply may constitute cause for discharge.

Visitor Services – Explain facilities and services, meet visitors, answer questions, provide directions, resolve complaints, and deliver interpretive programs and presentations.

Resource Management – Participate in prescribed fire, protect natural and cultural resources, implement vegetation and wildlife management plans, conduct restoration projects, and manage water resources.

Maintenance – Maintain structures, facilities, equipment, and grounds through routine, preventive, and corrective practices; conduct inspections and ensure cleanliness.

Administration – Prepare forms and reports, operate park radio, computers, and office equipment, conduct purchasing and fiscal activities, collect fees, reconcile receipts, and maintain park files.

Protection – Perform patrols and security checks, enforce park rules, secure facilities, and safeguard cash funds.

Other – Perform related duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of

  • Florida’s natural and cultural resources
  • Basic arithmetic
  • Good public relations

Skill in

  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Operating a cash register and reconciling receipts
  • Accurate report preparation
  • Professional customer service for public and internal clients
  • Grounds and building maintenance (mowing, weed eating, pressure washing, painting)
  • Power tools usage (chainsaw, drill)
  • Basic plumbing (repairing hose bibs, waterline repair)
  • Basic electrical work (replacing outlets, circuit breakers)
  • Basic carpentry (boardwalk, fence repairs)
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office Suite

Ability to

  • Participate in resource management tasks (prescribed fire, herbicide application)
  • Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Work independently with minimal supervision
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Speak in public
  • Apply rules, directives, policies, laws, and regulations
  • Conduct routine inspections, identify and investigate problems
  • Clean park facilities (including restrooms and trash cleanup)
  • Work outdoors in inclement weather
  • Perform physical labor
  • Lift 40 pounds and assist with transporting items up to 100 pounds
  • Work rotating shifts (nights, weekends, holidays)
  • Complete ranger academy successfully
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Complete background and fingerprint check
  • Wear uniform properly and adhere to grooming standards

Position of Special Trust Requirement

This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP Directive 422. Successful completion of background screening is required.

Pay

$2,896.67 month / $34,760.00 annual
