The Telecommunicator is a critical link between the public and emergency services. Under general supervision, this position receives, evaluates, and dispatches emergency and non-emergency calls for law enforcement, fire, EMS, and other public safety agencies in Nash County. Telecommunicators must remain calm under pressure, think clearly, and act decisively to ensure the safety of the public and first responders.

Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in a secure, climate-controlled communications center.
  • Requires prolonged periods of sitting, wearing a headset, and viewing multiple monitors.
  • Exposure to emotionally distressing situations and high call volumes.
Job Responsibilities
  • Answer and process emergency and non‑emergency calls using a multi‑line telephone system and computer‑aided dispatch (CAD) software.
  • Dispatch appropriate emergency services and provide pre‑arrival instructions when necessary.
  • Monitor and operate radio systems for multiple agencies simultaneously.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of all communications and activities.
  • Prioritize calls based on urgency and available resources.
  • Communicate effectively with field units, neighboring jurisdictions, and the public.
  • Operate NCIC/DCI terminal to query and enter information as required.
  • Perform welfare checks on responders and maintain responder safety awareness.
  • Follow established protocols and procedures, including EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch), EFD (Emergency Fire Dispatch), and EPD (Emergency Police Dispatch).
  • Participate in ongoing training and certification programs.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and focused in high‑stress situations.
  • Must pass a background check, drug screening, and hearing evaluation.
  • Must pass a basic skills assessment test.
  • Availability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in emergency communications or public safety.
  • Certification in NC DCI, EMD, EFD, EPD, CPR, and/or APCO/NENA standards.
  • Familiarity with CAD systems, radio dispatching, and GIS mapping tools.
