Perform fitting operations on a variety of parts such as stiffeners, diaphragms, cover plates, cross frames, etc., fabricated from steel beams, plates, channels, angles, etc.

Duties require the use of drawings, sketches, rules, squares, templates, burning torches, welding equipment, hand and power tools, hoist and similar devices.

Set up and operate burning, welding and fitting equipment. Select rods, tips, current, pressure, etc., to obtain required weld or cut. Select and fit pieces and parts to prepare sub-assemblies, braces, etc. Position and fit cover plates on girders. Fit flanges to webs and fit stiffeners on plate girders. Clamp, hold, tack weld, heat, bend, grind, bolt, etc., component parts to obtain required configuration and position.

Use care in fitting, burning and welding to prevent warp, shrinkage, distortion, expansion, etc, of material. Mark and/or tag material with proper job number, piece mark and other identifying marks as required.

Use torches and air-water mixture to alternately heat and cool material to obtain proper camber.

Instruct, train and check the work of a helper. Assist the helper or a higher classified fitter in the performance of their duties.

Keep record of job time, production and other data as required.

Follow all Company safety guidelines. Detect faulty operation of equipment and/or defective materials. Refer questionable cases to supervisor.

Maintain work area, tools and equipment in a clean, orderly and proper manner.

Perform duties within quality and quantity of work requirements.

Position Requirements

Ability to read ruler/tape measure.

Ability to do simple math calculations.

Ability to lift over 25 pounds on continuous basis.

Constant standing, stooping, bending, walking, reaching.

Manual dexterity to use hand tools and make machine adjustments.

Ability to work in non-climate controlled environment.

Ability to work in a team environment with minimal supervision.

Ability to work overtime and weekends as needed.
