Associate Director of Elementary Children’s Ministries
St. George’s Episcopal Church, Nashville is looking for a part-time Associate Director of Elementary Children’s Ministries. We are a large parish that seeks as a church to receive, live, and share the abundant life of Jesus Christ, through worship, Christian fellowship, and outreach and service to the world. Our Associate Director of Elementary Children’s Ministry will work with our Family Ministries team to help our parish fulfill our promise as a congregation at baptism to “do all in our power to support these children in their life in Christ.”
Reports to: Priest Associate for Children’s Ministries
Purpose: Lead and grow our program of Christian formation for children in elementary grades (1 st
-6 th ), relying on Scripture, liturgy, the sacraments, and the church calendar as the gifts God has given us to receive, live, and share the abundant life of Jesus Christ more fully. This role has a primary responsibility and leadership of the planning, implementing, and engagement of all aspects of this age group and their families and/or guardians.
Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Develop and oversee implementation of Sunday School curricular scope, sequence, and programming for children in elementary grades (1st-6 th ). Review and evaluate scope regularly to ensure that it fulfills the ministry’s vision and meets the needs of parishioner families.
- Visit 1 st
-6 th grade Sunday School classes regularly to teach, build relationships with children and teachers, and evaluate the effectiveness of our Sunday School program. - Work with Preschool Children’s Associate Director on recruitment, training, and spiritual formation of adult volunteers who serve with Children’s Ministries/Sunday School.
- Plan and lead Kids’ Chapel on Sunday mornings 2-3 times per month and support other Family Ministry team members on days they lead Kids’ Chapel.
- Work with preschool children’s director to plan and lead Vacation Bible School in July.
- Plan and oversee monthly “4-5-6 Club” off-site fellowship events for 4 th
-6 th graders, as well as the 6 th Grade Lock-In in May. - Build intentional relationships with children in 1 st
-6 th grade, by meeting them at school for lunch and other informal visits, while following Safeguarding guidelines. - Work with Children’s Ministry team and volunteer chairs to plan annual family ministry events, such as the Advent Wreath Party, Mardi Gras Party, Easter Egg Hunt, VBS, and Blessing of the Backpacks.
- Work with Children’s Ministry team to plan and implement liturgical services and activities designed for children throughout the church calendar, such as the Ash Wednesday Children’s service, Lenten Wednesday night programming, Children’s Stations of the Cross service on Good Friday, Pentecost Sunday Candle Lighting, and the annual Christmas Pageant.
- Work with Family Ministries Administrator on communications, facilities requests, logistics, ordering materials, and calendaring for children’s ministry events.
- Work closely with the Family Ministries team to create a vision for children’s ministry rge’s and develop an overall pathway of formation for our children from birth to high school graduation.
- Participate as a member of the family ministry team and larger church staff in an active schedule of gatherings for prayer, enrichment, and communication.
Requirements:
- A strong and personal Christian faith and a desire to continue to grow in their relationship with Christ
- A desire to see children and their families grow in the love and knowledge of God
- An appreciation of the Anglican tradition and a desire to pass it on to the next generation
- Experience in children/youth ministries focused on education, spiritual formation, and discipleship
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
- Ability to operate in a team-oriented environment while being able to take initiative and work independently
- Creativity, adaptability, and resourcefulness
- General experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Power point, Outlook, and Canva
