As a Staff in the State Income Tax practice, you will provide a variety of tax consulting, planning, and compliance services to a diverse range of clients operating in various sectors. Our state income tax practice is constantly evolving, and it’s here you’ll find everything you need to grow as we do. It’s all about taking on new skills and responsibilities as they arise and making the most of our dedicated mentors and training programs.

We’ll look to you to apply your knowledge to a wide range of tax areas and processes, devising strategic outcomes to some very complex issues. In return, you can expect the support of some of the most engaging colleagues around, as well as plenty of opportunities to progress your career.

You will oversee state‑level tax projects, including state tax planning (e.g., internal legal entity restructurings), state tax controversy (e.g., state audit assistance, state private letter rulings), and related research. You will also be responsible for managing, preparing, administering, and directing multiple state tax services for clients.

• A Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and an LLM in Taxation or related education.
• Membership or anticipated membership in a US state bar.
• A strong academic record including, without limitation, course work that EY deems relevant to this position.
• High level of proficiency in federal and state income tax code, regulations, and procedures
• Technical writing and research experience in a tax context.
• The ability and willingness to travel and work in excess of standard hours when necessary. In certain circumstances, travel may be required beyond your work location based on client and project needs.
• Access to reliable transportation to/from the EY office and client sites. A driver’s license is strongly recommended as ride share and public transportation options may not be available in all locations.

• The ability to analyze client data, technical guidance, and make recommendations to engagement teams.
• The ability to prioritize when working on multiple complex projects.
• Strong influencing skills, and the confidence to question existing processes.
• The ability to leverage firm‑approved AI tools in a business setting, including Microsoft Copilot.
