Job Summary

The Pediatric Cleft & Craniofacial Team Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) works in collaboration with an American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association (ACPA) accredited multidisciplinary health care team. The NP/PA provides healthcare in ambulatory and acute care health care settings with a focus on children with cleft and craniofacial diagnosis. Including inpatient management of surgical patients from pre-operative, peri-operative and post operative phases of care and serve as clinical lead and point of contact for all team patients and team members.

The NP/PA has didactic education, clinical competency and national certification in identified area of clinical practice. The NP/PA demonstrates medical knowledge, clinical judgment, technical competence, professionalism, interpersonal communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsible for professional development and competency validation.

Daily Roles, Responsibilities
  • The role spans clinic, inpatient, and administrative domains
  • The inpatient consultative services and expertise for the complex inpatient services to assess & manage children with cleft and craniofacial conditions and liaison with both faculty and consulting services in newborn nursery, NICU & PICU
  • Clinical ownership of the multi‑disciplinary team patients by preparing brief roster for clinics (8-10 patients)
  • Subject matter expert for intake of new patients into the CCF team system and effectively communicate plans with the team coordinators
  • Attend all pre‑natal cleft or craniofacial clinic visits
  • Participates in daily morning rounds with residents/fellows/attending to facilitate interservice communication, and throughout the day/between cases as needed
  • Communicates with families and referring providers re: CCF children prior to team and afterwards for assessment and management of clinical concerns and effectively close the loop with the faculty and team coordinators
  • Coordinates care for newborn cleft babies in or out of the VUMC network to ensure they are set on pre‑established clinical pathways
  • Maintain clinical pathways and team‑facing documentation with regards to multi‑disciplinary care
  • Maintain multi‑disciplinary team conference VUMC CME accreditation
  • Maintain and responsible for ACPA accreditation paperwork
Acute Care Pediatric NP/PA Requirements
  • Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP-AC) or Physician Assistant (PA) Required
  • Prior APP Experience Strongly Preferred
Key Responsibilities
  • Obtains and documents a health history; performs and documents complete, system‑focused, or symptom‑specific physical examination, assessment and plan of care.
  • In collaboration, provides healthcare services for primary, acute and complex care of patients and manages patient's overall care, identifying expected outcomes for diagnoses.
  • Orders, performs, interprets and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques, relevant supporting diagnostic information and diagnostic procedures where indicated.
  • Forms differential diagnoses and treats acute and chronic conditions.
  • Prescribes therapeutic interventions both pharmacologic, non‑pharmacologic and surgical, needed to achieve expected outcomes.
  • Utilizes evidence‑based, approved practice protocols in planning and implementing care.
