The Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) is seeking a contract Epidemiologist 1 to support the Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Program (TUPCP) and the Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant (PHHSBG), housed within the Division of Family Health and Wellness, Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion section
. The contractor will provide epidemiologic expertise to guide program planning and evaluation, analyze and interpret surveillance and program data to identify trends and disparities, develop data reports and visualizations to inform stakeholders and decision‑making, and support the implementation and monitoring of evidence‑based interventions across the state.
- Provide epidemiological support to the Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Program and the Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant.
- Analyze and evaluate program data to track performance metrics.
- Identify opportunities for technical assistance to improve data quality and program performance.
- Conduct basic descriptive epidemiologic analyses and interpret findings.
- Create reports and data visualizations to summarize findings.
- Prepare and deliver presentations summarizing surveillance data and program evaluation results, tailoring content for technical and non‑technical audiences such as program staff, leadership, community partners.
- Assist with updates to existing REDCap systems and develop new REDCap projects as required.
- Clean, manipulate, analyze, and generate reports from large datasets in SAS.
- Build and maintain data collection systems using REDCap.
- Ensure that all generated reports follow Data Release Guidelines.
- Work with program directors and communications specialists to develop infographics and disseminate findings among clinical and community partners.
- Use innovative means to improve the implementation and evaluation of programs and ensure compliance with grant requirements.
- Proficient in analytical methods and statistical software; SAS experience preferred.
- Expert in Microsoft suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).
- Experience with data visualization;
Tableau proficiency strongly preferred. - Experience managing databases; REDCap experience is strongly preferred.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; technical writing skills required.
- Experience evaluating and supporting public health programs is strongly preferred.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, statistics or health informatics preferred. Substitution of Experience for

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in a health science, biomedical science or environmental science field with two years’ work experience in epidemiology. - This hybrid position has in‑person attendance expected for the first day of employment for laptop deployment and onboarding in Nashville, TN.
- Required in‑person attendance for quarterly meetings, and in‑person attendance may be required for other meetings and professional development opportunities.
- Travel to Nashville will not be reimbursed; however, travel for site visits may be reimbursed by the state.
- Work week is 37.5 hours per week, Monday - Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM CST.
- Position is potentially renewable through 2029, pending funding availability.
