Job Summary

Shift Details
  • Full‑Time, Days (4x10s)
  • Variable schedule with late stay
  • No on‑call requirement
Incentives & Benefits
  • Sign‑On Bonus: $20,000 (taxable), paid in equal installments over 2 years (not available to current or recent VUMC employees within the past 12 months)
  • Relocation Assistance:
    Up to $10,000 (taxable), paid within 45 days of hire (eligible for relocation from >100 miles; same employee restrictions apply)
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with operating room team tasks, including room preparation, setup, and clean‑up.
  • Support patient positioning to maximize access to the operative site while ensuring patient safety and comfort.
  • Maintain a surgically clean environment to reduce the potential for patient infection through aseptic principles.
  • Initiate appropriate intra‑operative behaviors unique to first assisting.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as needed.
Qualifications
  • Required:

    Graduate of an approved specific discipline OR successful completion of a surgical assistant training program during the applicant's service as a member of any branch of the armed forces of the United States.
  • Required:

    Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Required:

    Registration with the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners.
  • Required:

    Certification from one of the listed issuers below:
    • CSFA – Certified Surgical First Assistant – National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
    • CSA – Certified Surgical Assistant – National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA)
    • CSA – Certified Surgical Assistant – National Commission for Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA)
    • SA‑C – Surgical Assistant Certified – American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA)
Technical Capabilities
  • Surgical Equipment Knowledge (Intermediate):
    Mastery of equipment and related devices, able to resolve equipment problems.
  • Procedures Knowledge (Intermediate):
    Mastery of procedures knowledge, able to train and educate others.
  • Operating Room Care (Intermediate):
    Mastery of operating room care, able to provide leadership.
  • Environmental Sterility & Safety (Intermediate):
    Mastery of environmental sterility and safety, able to train and educate others.
  • Inventory Management (Novice):
    Basic proficiency in inventory management skills, monitor material moved into and out of stockroom locations.
  • Surgical Technology (Intermediate):
    Mastery of surgical technology, able to provide leadership.
  • Equipment Maintenance (Intermediate):
    Mastery of preventive maintenance, able to conduct predictive maintenance on core products and equipment.
