** Vanderbilt University Medical Center Post‐Graduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency program is a 12-month, full‐time residency, accredited by the American Society of Health‐System Pharmacists. ** Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt (Monroe Carell) Post-Graduate Year One (PGY1) Residency program is a 12-month, full-time residency, accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) with an emphasis in pediatrics. PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm

D) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

The mission of our program is to develop a pharmacist with the skills and abilities to successfully practice as an acute care pharmacist, adjunct faculty member, and/or be prepared to pursue and complete PGY2 residency training. This residency also includes developing a core skill set in drug information and literature evaluation, pharmacotherapy evaluation and management, project-based research and team functioning, presentation development and delivery, and direct patient interaction.

Our residency program will provide each resident with specific learning experiences designed to enable the resident to expand the scope of his/her practice skills. The resident will be evaluated on ASHP goals/objectives as assigned on various learning experiences (rotations, longitudinal experiences, presentations, etc.) throughout the year. The ASHP Residency Learning System and Pharm Academic is used extensively, which offers the resident a tailored, personalized, and progressive learning experience throughout the year.

Residents have the opportunity to gain teaching experience and assist preceptors with teaching pharmacy students from the local colleges of pharmacy. An optional teaching certificate provided by one of the local colleges of pharmacy may be obtained during the residency. The resident will also gain experience in giving formal presentations and pharmacy research projects that are designed to improve patient care quality and safety throughout the year.
