MCJCHV Perfusion
Job Summary:Performs functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of patients during routine and/or long term (ventricular assist and /or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) support. Active participation in the Vanderbilt Cardiovascular Perfusion Technology Program as a clinical, didactic and simulation instructor. Performs ancillary administrative, research, and simulation responsibilities.
Department Summary:Cardiopulmonary Perfusionist provides extracorporeal support to patients during heart surgery and management of the heart lung machine for patients at Monroe Carell Jr Children’s Hospital in the population for which cardiac surgery or circulatory support is required. The perfusionist is independently responsible for a wide range of mechanical life support systems. This position is based in cardiac surgery department but due to the nature of the work provides clinical service throughout the institution on neonatal, infant, pediatric and adolescents.
The technical complexity of this position requires the incumbent to have an understanding of cardiac, congenital pediatrics, pulmonary, vascular, and orthotopic transplantation procedures. Life support via cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) must be administered to a varied patient population safely and efficiently. The perfusionist conducts CPB independently, working closely with the surgeons, anesthesiologist, and nursing staff in order to tailor the perfusion to the needs of each patient.
- Prepares for clinical procedures and safely, accurately and effectively operates perfusion equipment while monitoring patient physiology according to established VUMC perfusion policies, protocols, and procedures.
- Participates in the Vanderbilt Cardiovascular Perfusion Technology Program (CVPT) through two or more of the following:
Clinical, Didactic, and/or Simulation Instruction. - Researches through academic collaborations, data collection and analysis and publication.
- Develops or enhances quality standards in cardiovascular perfusion that promotes safety and protection of patients.

- Equipment Maintenance (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of preventive maintenance in practical applications of a difficult nature. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of successfully maintaining equipment, products, or systems without requiring support and instruction from others. Able to conduct predictive maintenance on core products and equipment.
- Medical Terminology & Documentation (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of medical terminology and documentation in practical applications of a difficult nature. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of successfully delivering results without requiring support and instruction from others. Able to train and educate by setting the example, giving instruction, providing leadership, and generally raising the level of performance of others while on the job.
- Procedures Knowledge (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of procedures knowledge in practical applications of a difficult nature. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of successfully delivering procedures knowledge services without requiring support and instruction from others. Able to train and educate by setting the example, giving technical instruction, providing leadership, and generally raising the level of performance of others while on the job.
- Cardiopulmonary Perfusion (Advanced): Demonstrates the uppermost levels of expertise in applying cardiopulmonary perfusion knowledge in challenging and complex situations.
