During their careers, special agents carry out assignments in both investigations and protection, with potential postings across the U.S. and abroad.

Responsibilities include:

• Providing protection for various protectees.
• Conducting criminal investigations related to financial obligations of the United States.
• Planning and executing security measures for National Special Security Events.

• U.S. citizenship is required.
• Possess a valid driver's license.
• Carry and use a firearm; firearm proficiency is mandatory.
• Be at least 21 years old at application and under 37 at conditional job offer, unless prior federal law enforcement service applies. Veterans' preference applicants must receive a conditional offer before age 40 to continue.
• Obtain and maintain a Top Secret Clearance.
• Uncorrected visual acuity of no worse than 20/100 binocular; corrected visual acuity of 20/20 or better in each eye.
• Hearing loss must not exceed 25 decibels in each ear across specified frequencies.
• Undergo drug testing prior to appointment and random testing thereafter.
• Complete 13 weeks of training at FLETC in Glynco, GA, and 18 weeks at the James J. Rowley Training Center in Laurel, MD.
• Sign a mobility agreement to accept assignments nationwide and abroad.
• Register with the Selective Service System or be exempt if male and born after December 31, 1959.
