Position Overview

Gray Line of Tennessee is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Driver Training Specialist to join our team. This role will be responsible for providing comprehensive training to CDL school candidates, guiding them through the licensing process, and delivering refresher training to current drivers to ensure ongoing safety, regulatory compliance, and skill development. Working closely with the Training Manager and a team of trainers, the Driver Training Specialist will support the execution of training programs that meet the company’s high standards for safety, professionalism, and regulatory adherence.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in bus operations, particularly with motor coaches and school buses, and will be skilled in evaluating and improving driver performance.

Compensation: $31/HR

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver hands‑on training and instruction to prospective CDL candidates, assisting them in becoming fully licensed drivers, including behind‑the‑wheel and classroom training.
  • Conduct refresher training sessions for current drivers to ensure compliance with safety protocols, company standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Training Manager and team to implement training programs and ensure they are in line with federal, state, and company regulations.
  • Evaluate the driving skills of new trainees and existing drivers, providing corrective feedback and additional coaching as needed.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of all training activities, assessments, and driver progress.
  • Assist in the execution of road tests and on‑the‑job evaluations to assess driver competency and adherence to safety standards.
  • Work closely with the safety and operations teams to identify opportunities for performance improvement and implement measures to enhance driver performance.
  • Provide ongoing support and coaching to drivers, ensuring they maintain a high level of safety awareness and operational proficiency.
  • Stay informed on regulatory changes and industry best practices to ensure training programs are current and effective.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience operating buses, including motor coaches and school buses.
  • Valid CDL A or B with P and S endorsements, held for a minimum of 2 years.
  • Experience in driver training, including behind‑the‑wheel instruction and evaluating driver performance.
  • Strong knowledge of safety regulations, industry best practices, and commercial driver standards.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train, coach, and engage drivers effectively.
  • Patient, supportive, and motivating approach to training, fostering a positive learning environment.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills, with the ability to track and report on driver progress.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, supporting the Training Manager and fellow trainers.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with CDL training programs in a supportive or instructional capacity.
  • Familiarity with both motor coach and school bus operations.
  • Background in safety management and risk mitigation in a transportation environment.
  • Knowledge of state and federal transportation regulations.
Work Environment

This position will involve a combination of office‑based administrative tasks and field‑based training activities.
