Travel

Requirements

This position requires routine and extensive travel across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Periodic travel along the Northeastern coast may also be required. Candidates must be willing and able to travel frequently, including overnight stays.

Job Summary

The Observer will perform observation for activities around live railroad tracks and is responsible for job site coordination, dispatcher/train communication, and ensuring all work is conducted in a manner that will not foul or affect the tracks.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide the required jobsite protection on each assignment, error‑free and consistent with the rules; including but not limited to radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers
  • Perform daily job briefings with all personnel on‑site, ensuring compliance with railroad safety requirements
  • Prepare and submit required electronic forms, including job set‑up forms for each flagging assignment, daily work reports, invoices, and other reports as required
  • Actively participate in routine reoccurring safety classes and qualification training
  • Maintain high levels of communication with the RWIC supervisors and managers regarding various assignments and schedules
  • Ensure all work is conducted out of the foul of the tracks
  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and respectful workplace culture, free from behaviors that undermine morale, productivity, or organizational values
  • Uphold the organization’s standards of integrity, accountability, and respect in all duties and interactions
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations
  • Other duties assigned or required to meet business needs
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Ability to meet required physical demands and complete necessary tasks
  • Ability to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains
  • Understanding of On‑Track Safety training and qualifications required for protected roadway workers
  • Proficiency in radio communication procedures between RWIC/EICs and assigned work group
  • Capability to conduct job briefings with all roadway workers at their location
  • Ability to place railroad advance warning and stop signs
  • Skill in installing railroad derails and applying locking devices
  • Proficiency with electronic communications, including email and text, and standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite)

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • A minimum of 5 years in railroad maintenance‑of‑way (MOW) experience within a Class I or Class II freight railroad
  • Employment is contingent upon the successful outcome of pre‑employment and recurring background checks, drug and alcohol testing, and classroom and field training, including assessments. Successful completion of all onboarding and recurring training requirements is mandatory for continued employment

Preferred Education and Experience

  • 5–10 years of experience in railroad maintenance‑of‑way (MOW) experience within a Class I or Class II freight railroad
  • Prior experience working within a railway company
  • Training in railway “Track Inspection Guidelines” or equivalent
