Thermal Sciences Associate – Natick, MA

Exponent is a worldwide engineering and scientific consulting firm known for solving complex safety, health, and sustainability challenges. We seek a Thermal Sciences Associate to conduct failure analyses and provide design support for fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transport, combustion, and electrochemistry problems related to thermal runaway events in battery systems. Specific duties include planning and executing experimental test programs, performing fieldwork and inspections, preparing proposals and technical reports, and presenting findings to clients.

• Developing test plans, instrumenting, and carrying out laboratory tests.
• Performing engineering calculations and analysis.
• Preparing proposals and technical reports, and presenting findings to clients.
• Travel may be required for client work (both domestic and international).

• Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
• Legally authorized to work in the United States (no immigration sponsorship required).
• Strong technical background in thermal sciences (vent gas & fire propagation, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, material response in fire).
• Experience with battery testing, performance measurement, failure analysis, or electrochemical systems analysis is a plus.
• Demonstrated leadership skills and an ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment.
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong laboratory skills including construction of apparatus, instrumentation, data acquisition, and data analysis.
• Ability and desire to tackle a wide variety of engineering problems beyond core specialization.

Associate level total compensation includes base salary, performance bonuses, annual bonus potential, and a 401(k) employer contribution of 7% of base salary. The base salary range for this position is USD $135,000 – $150,000 per year, adjusted for experience and capabilities.
